Herbert Reed was born in Kansas City, Missouri August 7th 1928. At age fifteen Reed moved to Los Angeles. In the early fifties Reed was working as a cab driver. Having a unique bass singing voice, Reed began singing with various vocal groups. Reed was asked to joined a quartet that included a tenor named David Lynch. The group was called The Platters. They signed with Federal Records and another young tenor was added named Tony Williams.
